The Red Kite in the UK: Wales’ National Bird and Conservation Success
The red kite is one of the most striking birds of prey in the UK, easily recognised by its angled red wings with black tips and long forked tail. Measuring 58–64 cm in length, with a wingspan of up to 1.8 meters and weighing 1–1.2 kg, this majestic bird is a favourite among wildlife enthusiasts in Wales.
The Red Kite’s Troubled Past
Although the red kite is the national bird of Wales, it was once nearly wiped out. During the 19th and 20th centuries, these birds faced heavy persecution, largely because gamekeepers considered them a threat. By the mid-20th century, the red kite population in the UK had fallen to dangerously low numbers.
Rewilding and Conservation Efforts
The story of the red kite’s comeback is a prime example of rewilding in action. Conservation efforts began in the 1980s, and the Welsh Kite Trust, formed in 1996, played a key role in their recovery. Initial studies revealed that the remaining birds were genetically related, likely due to habitat loss. To improve genetic diversity, birds from other regions were introduced, giving the population a much-needed boost.
Red Kites Today
Thanks to careful conservation and rewilding efforts, the red kite population in the UK has rebounded to around 2,500 breeding pairs. Feeding stations support these magnificent birds, attracting large gatherings that not only help the species survive but also create opportunities for wildlife tourism and education.
The recovery of the red kite shows how rewilding and habitat protection can help species once pushed to the brink bounce back. It’s a powerful reminder that humans can play a positive role in restoring nature.
